Amphenol ICC's USB series A has a unique latching mechanism that was developed to address the concern of unintentional interruption of data transmission. The standard USB connector uses a push pull interface with no latching. It relies on the design of the mating interface and ground tabs to maintain the connection of the plug to the receptacle.
Currently, there are applications in a number of markets where vibration and inadvertent separation of the cable is a potential problem due to loss of data when the mated interface is accidentally broken. Connectors in USB series A have latches that must be intentionally raised in order to remove the plug. An accidental pull on the cable of up to 22 lbs (10 kg) of force will not separate the connectors.
