Thermal diodes are based on the principle that electric diodes change voltage linearly according to temperature. When a thermal diode's temperature increases, the forward voltage decreases. Designers can determine the junction temperature of a device by passing a current through the diode and measuring the resulting voltage. Thermal diodes can be embedded on microprocessors to monitor the processor's die temperature. The thermal diodes are placed in the processor core where the highest temperatures occur.
